About Henk Vos
Henk Vos was born in Amsterdam in 1946. He trained in fine art at the Johannesburg School of Art and initially worked as a commercial artist and newspaper cartoonist. In 1975, he shifted to becoming a full-time wildlife painter. From 1982 onward, he turned his artistic focus to equestrian subjects. Over the years, Vos gained international recognition—he was invited to exhibit at prestigious events like the World Wilderness Congress in 1977 and the Wildlife Artist of the World exhibition in 1985. His powerful painting Survival of the Giants became an emblem for African elephant conservation, and he later created a massive 5 m oil painting titled The Painting of the Century, commemorating the 100th running of South Africa’s famous July Handicap horse race.
Stylistically, Vos is celebrated for his meticulous realism and deep respect for animals and nature. As one gallery noted, he is “arguably the foremost equine and wildlife painter in South Africa,” capturing both majestic landscapes and detailed wildlife with precision and emotion.
Since relocating back to the Netherlands, Henk Vos continues to enrich his artistic journey. His online gallery remains updated with new wildlife and equine paintings, reflecting his ongoing creative passion. While formal exhibitions or public projects in the Netherlands are not yet featured, Henk remains committed to his craft. Visitors to this website can view his latest works and reach out directly via email for commissions or inquiries.”
